Phnom Penh, April 18, 2024 – The General Commissariat of National Police reported that during the four-day Khmer Traditional New Year holiday, from April 13 to 16, there were 64 road accidents across Cambodia.
These incidents resulted in 37 fatalities and left 88 individuals injured. The police detailed that 17 accidents occurred on each of the first two days, followed by 18 on the third day and 12 on the final day of celebrations.
In comparison, last year's Khmer New Year festivities, which spanned from April 14 to 16, saw 45 traffic accidents. These earlier incidents claimed 25 lives and injured 92 people.
Authorities have identified excessive speeding, failure to yield the right of way, driving under the influence, non-use of helmets, unsafe overtaking, and improper turning as the primary causes of these accidents.
The report highlights ongoing concerns over road safety in Cambodia, particularly during major holidays when traffic significantly increases as people travel to participate in festivities across the country.
